On January 12, 2018, a new fiber optic network connecting Nepal to China was inaugurated in Kathmandu.

Until then, Nepal was entirely dependent on India for its access to internet.

Another cable had already been launched by China in December 2014, but was completely destroyed during the April 2015 earthquake.

This network, which is operated by “China Telecom Global” company, will offer fast internet access in Nepal, and will create competition between the various operators.

The Belt and Road initiative is not just about roads and railways; fiber optic development is a major part of this program to modernize countries along the new Silk Roads.

This new network also illustrates the strengthening of China-Nepal relations.
